Titleist has been the most played driver on the PGA Tour for the past five seasons, but the brand are not stopping there with the release of three new models in their GT range, which they say are the ‘most advanced and best-performing’ drivers they have ever produced.
The new GT2, GT3 and GT4 drivers have been designed to offer faster, longer, straighter and more forgiving performance right across the face compared to previous Titleist drivers.
The GT2 is designed to offer speed and forgiveness across the face, with a high-MOI setup, the GT3 is designed for fine-tuned speed and control with maximised distance, and the GT4 is a low-spin, more compact driver designed to lower spin and deliver a more penetrating ball flight.
The new GT Drivers feature a range of new technologies compared to the previous TSR Drivers, including:
Seamless Thermoform Crown
Each GT model features an ultra-lightweight crown made from a Proprietary Matrix Polymer. This is a material which hasn’t been used in golf clubhead design before, and allowed Titleist engineers more scope with internal weighting, to provide more gains.
The crown is wrapped to the sole using a thermoforming process, which produces a clean look with no visible seam.
The acoustic properties of the Polymer allowed the engineers to fine-tune sound and feel, while maximising weight-saving gains from the new construction.
Split Mass Construction
Saving weight in the crown meant that Titleist were able to reposition weight into optimal positions within the clubhead. Mass has been pushed further towards the front of the club, promoting greater speed through CG placement, and also towards the rear for high-MOI performance.
The CG placement across the three models vary, to give golfers the option of a different combination of speed, launch angle and spin.
Improved Aerodynamics
Titleist have also worked to offer better optimization of aerodynamics across the three models, something which was previously not possible due to design constraints.
The new GT models feature more refined profiles, helping to reduce drag and increase clubhead speed.
Enhanced Speed Ring with VFT
The GT drivers have two key technologies which contribute to fast ball speeds off the face.
First, an upgraded titanium Speed Ring stabilises the perimeter of the clubface to maximise speed when hit from the middle, whilst Variable Face Thickness (VFT) works to keep ball speeds higher when you don’t find the centre of the face, avoiding any distance drop-off.
Titleist GT2 Driver
The GT2 driver is designed for golfers looking for speed and forgiveness even if they don’t hit the middle of the face every time. Players who struggle to strike the ball consistently will still see high ball speeds thanks to the Speed Ring and VFT, along with plenty of stability thanks to the high-MOI design of the GT2.
The shape of the head has also been updated, to provide a more confidence-inspiring look with improved aerodynamics. As a result you’ll see a clubhead that is longer from front-to-back and a clubface is marginally shallower.
Compared to the likes of TSi2 and TSR2, the GT2 looks more pear shaped, so that it looks a little more like a GT3. There’s an interchangeable weight in the rear position, allowing the headweight and swingweight to be modified for performance and feel.
Titleist GT3 Driver
The GT3 drivers deliver fast ball speeds with the most adjustability for golfers looking to optimise distance and fine-tune their ball flight.
The new Adjustable CG Track is closer to the face compared to the TSR3, allowing fitters and golfers to choose between five different CG locations behind their typical strike location for more speed and consistency.
The GT3 has a 460cc clubhead, although it appears more compact and pear-shape, with a taller clubface. The head is also more aerodynamic than the TSR3, producing more clubhead speed.
Titleist GT4 Driver
The GT4 is designed for golfers who struggle with high spin rates – usually those over 3,000rpm – for a more penetrating ball flight which gets the most out of their ball speed. At 430cc, it has a smaller profile than the GT2 and GT3 models.
The driver has dual-spin control which allows golfers to choose between more aggressive spin reduction, or a more moderate option which doesn’t lower spin quite so drastically. This is achieved by choosing where the heavier (11 gram) and lighter (3 gram) weights are positioned in the head.
The new Titleist GT Drivers are available from 23rd August, at an SRP of £579, or £749 with the addition of premium shafts.
