After a very loud and very expensive start to life in the golf equipment world, PXG seem to have calmed down over the last couple of years and are sticking to their task of making great quality golf equipment with slightly less fuss these days.
For 2024 the brand have announced two new iron models - the seventh generation of their 0311 Irons, as well as an all-new game improvement Black Ops iron.
Take a closer look at each model here:
PXG O311 GEN7 Irons
PXG say that the new models are more than a decade in development, and they have managed to push the COR (coefficient of restitution) right to the limits allowed by the USGA, which are said to produce the longest, best feeling and most forgiving irons in the brand's history.
The irons feature the thinnest face in golf, at just 0.050" thick, as well as a new internal polymer called QuantumCOR. This is extremely lightweight and helps to reduce the mass of the core, allowing more weight to be moved lower and to the perimeter of the back of the head, increasing MOI for more forgiveness.
This combines with variable face technology to maximise face deflection, producing higher ball speeds and creating a great sound and feel.
Three are also three different weighting technologies which enhance the head design. An internal 20 gram toe weight balances the CG location in the centre of the face while raising MOI for more forgiveness.
Precision Weighting Technology is situated at the back of the clubhead, with a large weight used to dial in the correct swing weight during fittings and custom building.
A new lightweight Titanium Bezel Technology houses this weight, which removes mass from the centre of the head to be redistributed more towards the perimeter.
These three different technologies work together to provide a combination of distance, workability and forgiveness.
There are two different clubhead options available in the new 0311 GEN7 Irons. The standard O311 P GEN7 provide a balance of workability and forgiveness. They're designed for low to mid handicap golfers, with a moderate offset, mid-sized head, clean aesthetic and good forgiveness levels.
The 0311 XP GEN7 irons are created for mid to high handicap golfers, and feature a larger head with more offset for better distance and higher forgiveness levels.
The PXT 0311 P GEN7 Irons are available from 4-GW, whilst the 0311 XP GEN7 Irons also come with the option of a SW and LW. The Chrome finish is £209 per iron, whilst the Xtreme Dark finish is priced at £219 per iron.
PXG Black Ops Irons
Hot on the heels of the Black Ops Driver which Georgina reviewed earlier in the year, the new Black Ops irons are designed to offer a ‘breakthrough’ in game improvement.
They feature a thicker topline, larger face profile and increased offset compared to typical PXG irons, and are said to appeal to a wide variety of golfers.
One of the key aims was raising MOI to improve forgiveness levels, and this was achieved by a Dual Cavity Design which moves mass from the centre of the club and redistributes it to the perimeter.
A weight saving insert on the outer cavity allows the CG to be moved lower and further back in the head, for optimum launch and maximum forgiveness.
The inner cavity is filled with XCOR2, a lightweight polymer which gives golfers more help on both heel-toe and high-low mishits.
The irons feature a high strength maraging steel face, allowing the face geometry to be extremely thin. The face also includes Power Channel Technology, a U-shaped corridor built internally into the club face to increase deflection.
These technologies combine to generate a feel which is said to be better than a forged iron, with high forgiveness and ball speed.
The PXG Black Ops Irons are available from 4-PW with GW, SW and LW options also offered. They have an RRP of £139 per iron.
