Titleist launched it's new TS generation of drivers last summer with the release of the TS2 and TS3 models, which have been an incredible success to say the least. So much so that they have become the most played driver models on the PGA Tour this season.
On the back of this continuing success story, it isn't stopping there. A new third model, the Titleist TS4, has just been unveiled which promises to provide ultra-low spin along with the same ball speed and distance gains that the TS2 and TS3 have been able to offer.
The new driver will be showcased by staffers on the PGA Tour at the Valero Texas Open this week, suggesting that it can be suitable for golfers of all skill levels who are looking to lower their spin rates without getting the usual probable loss of ball speed as a result.
Titleist Vice President of Marketing, Josh Talge, explained:
TS drivers have exceeded all our expectations both on tour and with golfers around the world. When it comes to your driver performance, TS has shown that it’s no longer a one or two-horse race.
While we know most golfers find their best fit in a TS2 or TS3 driver, there is a percentage of players out there with distinct performance needs, such as aggressive spin reduction. TS4 is the ultra low-spin that still provides exceptional ball speed. If you want to hit it longer but are having trouble controlling spin off the tee, TS4 was made for you.
The technology seen in the TS2 and TS3 has also made its way into the TS4 and has been optimised for its 430cc Speed Chassis, with the following innovations in place:
Ultra-Thin Titanium Crown
The thinnest titanium crown in golf, 20% thinner than their previous 917 line, means that weight can be redistributed low and forward in the head to reduce spin.
Thinner, Faster Face
Titleist’s fastest ever face – a Radial VFT (variable face thickness) – reduces weight and delivers both faster ball speeds and higher forgiveness levels. Each TS driver face now undergoes a 100% CT inspection, which ensures that speed performance is at the maximum allowable limit.
Streamlined Shape
The 430cc classic pear shaped head is aerodynamic and reduces drag, allowing golfers to swing faster and generating more distance from increased club head speed.
Low and Forward CG
The centre of gravity is, unsurprisingly, pushed low and forward in the head – 5mm further forward than in the TS2. The SureFit flat weight is also further forward, producing even lower spin and helping to promote a more penetrating ball flight which is straighter and more consistent.
In the TS4 golfers also get the benefit of Titleist’s impressive SureFit Hosel, which gives the option of 16 different loft and lie settings, to allow for ultimate optimisation of ball flight during the fitting process.
There are four aftermarket shaft options available which are the same as the TS2 and TS3 – Even Flow T1100 White 65 (low launch and spin), Hzrdus Smoke Black 60 (low/mid launch and spin), Tensei AV Series Blue 55 (mid launch and spin) and Kuro Kage Black Dual Core 50 (high launch and moderate spin) – along with a large range of other custom choices.
The TS4 will be available from £499 SRP on July 27th in 8.5, 9.5 and 10.5 lofts. Fitting is available alongside the rest of the TS range from Titleist Product Specialists and at National Fitting Centres from June 20th.
It is interesting to see that Titleist, who over the last decade have been very consistent with the method and frequency of their driver releases, seem to be expanding their range to provide a more comprehensive range that suits all golfers.
The TS range has no doubt reignited it's popularity in the woods department since it was initially released last year. The TS4 appears to be Titleist seizing this opportunity to really establish themselves right at the top of the pile when it comes to a full suite of driver offerings for all golfers.
As usual however, the focus on custom fitting is going nowhere fast. To decide which of the three TS Drivers could be the one for you, visiting a trusted National Fitting Centre is the best way to get your head around which to stick in the bag.
Have you tested any of the TS models? Would you be interesting in seeing if the TS4 can provide the low spin and high ball speed numbers that Titleist are suggesting? As always, we are keen to hear your thoughts. Let us know in the comments below.
